Category Name Anti-Cold / Herbal Aromatic Decongestant & Antimicrobial
Common Indications HI-SOFT S/G is indicated for the symptomatic relief of upper respiratory tract discomfort associated with common cold and related conditions. It is commonly prescribed for:
- Nasal congestion and stuffiness associated with the common cold
- Irritated nasal passages requiring soothing and decongestant therapy
- Cough associated with upper respiratory tract infections
- Bronchitis and lower respiratory tract discomfort requiring aromatic vapour therapy
- Sinusitis with associated nasal blockage and facial pressure
- Asthma and respiratory conditions requiring symptomatic breathing support
- General upper respiratory tract discomfort requiring combined antimicrobial and decongestant action
- Croup and other conditions causing breathing difficulty requiring eucalyptol-based vapour relief
- Mild oral and throat disinfection associated with cold and respiratory infections
Common Dosings One soft gelatin capsule orally, two to three times daily — after food — or as directed by your physician. The dose and duration of therapy should be determined by the treating physician based on the nature and severity of symptoms and clinical response. Do not exceed the prescribed dose. Not recommended for prolonged self-medication without medical supervision.
Common Side Effects The following side effects may occasionally occur during the course of treatment. Consult your doctor if any of these persist or worsen:
- Nasal irritation or discomfort
- Throat irritation or mild burning sensation in the throat
- Burning sensation in the mouth or upper respiratory tract
- Watery or irritated eyes
- Mild gastric discomfort or warmth in the stomach with higher doses
- Skin rash or hypersensitivity reaction in susceptible individuals — inform your doctor if experienced
- Serious allergic reactions such as facial swelling or difficulty breathing — seek immediate medical attention if severe
Common Interactions Significant systemic drug interactions with this combination of volatile essential oils and antiseptic agents are uncommon at recommended therapeutic doses. However, the following precautions are advised:
- Other Aromatic or Volatile Oil-Based Products: Concurrent use of other camphor, menthol, or eucalyptus-containing preparations may lead to excessive exposure to volatile aromatic compounds — avoid simultaneous use without medical advice
- CNS Depressants / Sedatives: Camphor in high doses may have mild CNS stimulant properties — use with caution alongside CNS-acting medications
- Topical or Inhalational Preparations Containing Similar Agents: Combined use may increase local irritation of the nasal passages, throat, and airways — use only one preparation at a time unless specifically directed by your physician
- Always inform your doctor of all medications, supplements, and herbal products currently being used
Special Instructions
| Condition | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Pregnancy | Adequate safety data during pregnancy is not currently available. Use only if clearly indicated and under strict medical supervision after careful benefit-risk evaluation by the treating physician. Camphor in particular should be used with caution during pregnancy as it may cross the placental barrier. |
| Breastfeeding | Adequate safety data during breastfeeding is not currently available. Consult your doctor before use during lactation. |
| Alcohol | The safety of concurrent alcohol use has not been fully established. It is advisable to avoid alcohol during therapy to support recovery and minimise any potential additive effects on the respiratory system. |
| Driving & Machinery | No known interaction with driving ability under normal conditions of use at recommended doses. Safe to drive unless you experience unusual dizziness or discomfort during therapy. |
| Liver Disease | No significant interaction identified under normal therapeutic conditions of use. Consult your physician if you have known liver disease before starting this medication. |
| Kidney Disease | No significant interaction identified under normal therapeutic conditions of use. Consult your physician if you have known kidney disease before starting this medication. |
Mechanism of Action HI-SOFT S/G combines five naturally derived essential oil components, each working through a distinct and complementary local mechanism to provide comprehensive symptomatic relief from cold and respiratory congestion:
Camphor: A naturally occurring bicyclic monoterpenoid that acts on transient receptor potential (TRP) channels — particularly TRPV1 and TRPM8 — in the nasal and respiratory mucosa to produce a cooling and decongestant sensation. Its volatile vapours effectively ease nasal congestion, suppress the cough reflex by reducing airway irritability, and provide a soothing effect on inflamed upper respiratory tissues
Chlorothymol: A potent phenolic antiseptic and oral disinfectant derived from thymol that exerts broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses by disrupting microbial cell membranes and denaturing microbial proteins. It provides localised disinfection of the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract, reducing microbial load and providing symptomatic relief from cold-associated oral and throat discomfort
Eucalyptol (1,8-Cineole): The principal bioactive constituent of eucalyptus oil that acts as a mucolytic, anti-inflammatory, and bronchodilatory agent. It thins and loosens airway secretions, reduces mucosal inflammation, and improves airflow in the bronchi — making breathing easier in conditions such as bronchitis, asthma, croup, and sinusitis. It also exhibits direct antimicrobial properties against respiratory pathogens
Menthol: A naturally occurring cyclic terpene alcohol derived from peppermint oil that activates cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptors in the nasal and bronchial mucosa, producing an immediate cooling and decongestant sensation. It relieves nasal stuffiness, soothes irritated airways, reduces the urge to cough, and provides symptomatic relief from sinusitis, bronchitis, and similar respiratory conditions. Its mild local anaesthetic properties additionally soothe throat irritation
Terpineol: A monoterpenoid alcohol with potent antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-stimulating properties. It acts by disrupting microbial cell membrane integrity, inhibiting pathogen growth, and modulating local immune responses in the respiratory mucosa — supporting the body's natural defence mechanisms against cold-causing pathogens
Together, these five essential oil components provide synergistic multi-mechanism relief — decongestant action (Camphor, Menthol), mucolytic and bronchodilatory support (Eucalyptol), broad-spectrum antimicrobial protection (Chlorothymol, Terpineol), and immune stimulation (Terpineol) — making HI-SOFT S/G a comprehensive natural aromatic therapy for the symptomatic management of the common cold and associated upper respiratory conditions.
Instructions to Take
- Take this soft gelatin capsule exactly as prescribed by your doctor
- Always take after food to minimise the risk of gastric warmth or discomfort from the aromatic essential oil components
- Swallow the soft gelatin capsule whole with a full glass of plain water — do not crush, cut, or chew the capsule as the volatile essential oils may cause irritation to the oral mucosa if released directly in the mouth
- Take at regular intervals as prescribed for consistent symptomatic relief throughout the day
- Do not use simultaneously with other camphor, menthol, or eucalyptus-containing preparations — including inhalants, rubs, or nasal drops — without specific medical direction, to avoid excessive aromatic compound exposure
- Do not self-medicate or use for prolonged periods without consulting your doctor — if symptoms persist beyond 5 to 7 days, worsen, or are accompanied by high fever, seek medical attention
- If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember — however, skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one
- Store away from direct heat and open flames as the essential oil components are volatile and potentially flammable
- Keep out of reach of children — essential oil-based products can be harmful to young children if accidentally ingested in large quantities
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture — do not refrigerate
