Category Name Anti-Biotics / Topical Antiseptic & Wound Care
Common Indications POVIFATE 15GM is indicated for the topical management of skin wounds and prevention of local infections. It is commonly used for:
- Treatment of infected or potentially infected skin wounds
- Abrasions, cuts, and minor lacerations prone to microbial contamination
- Superficial skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria and microorganisms
- Prevention of infection in post-operative or post-traumatic wounds
- Diabetic foot ulcers and chronic non-healing wounds with secondary bacterial infection
- Burns and skin lesions requiring antimicrobial and wound-healing support
- General wound care requiring combined antiseptic, antibiotic, and mucosal protective therapy
Common Dosings Apply a thin layer of ointment directly to the affected area once or twice daily — or as directed by your physician. Clean and dry the wound thoroughly before application. The affected area may be covered with a sterile dressing after application if advised by the treating physician. The frequency and duration of use should be determined by the treating physician based on the nature, size, and severity of the wound. Do not apply to large areas of broken skin for prolonged periods without medical supervision.
Common Side Effects The following side effects may occur at the site of application. Consult your doctor if any of these persist or worsen:
- Dryness of skin at the application site
- Burning sensation at the application site
- Irritation or redness at the application site
- Itching at the application site
- Skin discolouration due to iodine content (temporary and harmless)
- Rarely, hypersensitivity or allergic reactions such as rash or swelling — discontinue use and seek medical attention if severe
Common Interactions Inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and topical products you are currently using on the affected area. Notable interactions include:
- Other Topical Antiseptics / Iodine-Containing Preparations: Concurrent use may increase local skin irritation and reduce the therapeutic effectiveness of the ointment — avoid simultaneous use on the same wound area
- Other Wound-Healing Topical Agents: Combined use may alter the efficacy of individual components — use only under medical supervision
- Lithium Therapy: Povidone-iodine, if absorbed systemically through large or open wounds, may potentially affect thyroid function in patients on lithium therapy — inform your doctor if you are on lithium
- Alcohol (Topical or Systemic): Metronidazole may cause a disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol — avoid alcohol consumption and alcohol-based topical products during therapy

Mechanism of Action POVIFATE ointment combines three active ingredients, each working through a distinct and complementary mechanism to provide comprehensive wound care and infection control:
- Povidone-Iodine: A broad-spectrum topical antiseptic that works by slowly and steadily releasing free iodine upon contact with the wound surface. The released iodine oxidises and disrupts essential microbial proteins, enzymes, and DNA, effectively killing a wide range of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and spores, thereby preventing wound infection and promoting a clean healing environment
- Metronidazole: A nitroimidazole antibiotic that exerts its bactericidal effect by penetrating microbial cells and damaging their DNA structure. It is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa commonly found in infected wounds, reducing microbial load and preventing secondary infection
- Sucralfate: A mucosal protective and wound-healing agent that forms a protective gel-like barrier over the wound surface. It promotes tissue regeneration, reduces local inflammation, and supports the formation of granulation tissue, thereby accelerating wound healing and reducing scarring
Together, these three components provide synergistic antimicrobial, antiseptic, and wound-healing action, making POVIFATE an effective topical solution for comprehensive wound management.
