Category Name Anti-Biotics / Cephalosporin Antibiotic with Probiotic
Common Indications YUVISEF-200 LB is indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, with concurrent probiotic support to maintain intestinal flora balance during antibiotic therapy. It is commonly prescribed for:
- Upper and lower respiratory tract infections including bronchitis, pneumonia, and pharyngitis
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs) including cystitis and uncomplicated pyelonephritis
- Ear infections (otitis media) and sinusitis
- Tonsillitis and throat infections caused by susceptible streptococcal organisms
- Uncomplicated gonorrhoea and other susceptible sexually transmitted infections
- Enteric fever and typhoid caused by susceptible strains
- Prevention and management of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea through concurrent probiotic supplementation
Common Dosings One tablet (Cefixime 200 mg + Lactic Acid Bacillus 60 Million Spores) orally, twice daily — with or without food — or as directed by your physician. The dispersible tablet (DT) may be dissolved in a glass of water before consumption for ease of administration. The dose and duration of therapy should be determined by the treating physician based on the type and severity of infection and clinical response. Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve early.
Common Side Effects The following side effects may occur during the course of treatment. Consult your doctor if any of these persist or worsen:
- Nausea
- Diarrhoea or loose stools
- Stomach pain or abdominal discomfort
- Bloating or abdominal distension
- Indigestion or heartburn
- Flatulence or excessive gas
- Skin rash or allergic reaction — seek immediate medical attention if severe
- Rarely, severe allergic reactions such as facial swelling, difficulty breathing, or anaphylaxis — seek emergency medical attention immediately if these occur
Common Interactions Inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking. Notable interactions include:
- Anticoagulants (Warfarin): Concurrent use with Cefixime may enhance the anticoagulant effect, increasing the risk of bleeding — regular INR monitoring is strongly recommended
- Probenecid: May reduce the renal excretion of Cefixime, leading to increased plasma concentrations and a higher risk of adverse effects — dose adjustment may be required under medical supervision
- Live Bacterial Vaccines (Typhoid Vaccine): Cefixime may reduce the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines — vaccination should ideally be completed before or after the antibiotic course
- Lactic Acid Bacillus & Concurrent Antibiotic Use: Strong antibiotics may reduce the effectiveness of the probiotic component if taken simultaneously — it is advisable to take the probiotic component at least 2 hours apart from other antibiotics where possible, as directed by your physician
Special Instructions
| Condition | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Pregnancy | Adequate safety data during pregnancy is not currently available. Use only if clearly indicated and under strict medical supervision after careful benefit-risk evaluation by the treating physician. |
| Breastfeeding | Cefixime does not pass into breast milk in clinically significant amounts and is generally considered unlikely to harm the infant. Consult your doctor before use during lactation. |
| Alcohol | The safety of concurrent alcohol use has not been fully established. It is advisable to avoid alcohol during the course of antibiotic therapy to support recovery and minimise gastrointestinal side effects. |
| Driving & Machinery | Does not usually impair alertness or driving ability. Safe to drive unless you experience unusual dizziness or discomfort during therapy. |
| Liver Disease | Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment. Dose adjustment and regular liver function monitoring may be required — consult your physician before use. |
| Kidney Disease | Use with caution in patients with renal impairment as Cefixime is primarily excreted by the kidneys. Dose reduction based on creatinine clearance may be required — consult your physician before use. |
Mechanism of Action YUVISEF-200 LB combines two active components, each working through a distinct and complementary mechanism to treat bacterial infection while protecting gut health:
Cefixime (200 mg): A third-generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic that exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to and blocks penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on the bacterial cell membrane, preventing the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains that form the structural backbone of the bacterial cell wall. Without this protective covering, the bacteria lose structural integrity, rupture, and die. Cefixime demonstrates broad-spectrum activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms, making it effective for diverse bacterial infections
Lactic Acid Bacillus — Lactobacillus (60 Million Spores): A beneficial live micro-organism (probiotic) that works by replenishing and restoring the natural balance of healthy intestinal flora disrupted by antibiotic therapy or gastrointestinal infection. Lactobacillus colonises the gut, competes with pathogenic organisms for nutrients and adhesion sites, produces lactic acid to maintain an acidic intestinal environment unfavourable to harmful bacteria, and supports the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier. This dual action effectively prevents and reduces antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and gastrointestinal discomfort during the course of treatment
Together, Cefixime and Lactic Acid Bacillus provide a comprehensive therapeutic approach — eliminating the bacterial infection while simultaneously protecting and restoring gut microbiome health.
Instructions to Take
- Take this tablet exactly as prescribed by your doctor
- May be taken with or without food — however, taking it with food may help reduce the risk of stomach upset and nausea
- The dispersible tablet (DT) may be dissolved in a full glass of water and consumed immediately for ease of swallowing
- Complete the full prescribed course of antibiotics — do not stop early even if you feel better, as incomplete treatment may lead to antibiotic resistance or recurrence of infection
- Where multiple antibiotics are prescribed concurrently, take the probiotic component at least 2 hours apart from other antibiotics for optimal probiotic effectiveness
- Do not self-medicate, adjust the dose, or share this medication with others
- If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember — however, skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one
- Avoid alcohol throughout the course of treatment
- Ensure adequate hydration during the course of therapy
- Keep out of reach of children
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Some probiotic-containing preparations may require refrigeration — check the packaging label for specific storage instructions
